Rosecliff Mansion

I have been attending a series of quest speakers, dramatic readings and more
about the book and movie "The Great Gatsby"
All events took place in the room above
at Rosecliff Mansion in Newport, R.I.
where many party scenes from the movie where filmed..
Who can forget Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in this tragic love story
by F. Scott Fitzgerald
during the roaring 20's....

Rosecliff was commissioned by
Theresa Fair Oelrichs in 1899...
A silver heiress.
The house was completed in 1902
at a reported cost of $2.5 million...

Mrs. Oelrichs hosted fabulous entertainments here,
including a fairy tale dinner and a party featuring famed magician Harry Houdini
here is the party filmed in the back yard at Rosecliff...

Can you imagine the parties, the clothing, the food, the jewels?

Will be attending a Gatsybian like Jazz concert there soon,
cannot wait.

Karen,
I recently found your blog and very much enjoyed it! The Great Gatsby was a wistful film, but I liked it. I’m familiar with Rosecliff, because my sister owns a home near there.
The opulent lifestyle from that era is hard to imagine, and these were summer homes! I’ve toured a few and learned they were built before income tax became law, so they had more disposable income. Thank you for this interesting post, I feel like I took a mini holiday.

We have always loved The Rosecliff mansion and have visited many times over the years. Many years back, we re-created THE WHITE BALL,a party originaly held at Rosecliff, Newport, RI.
Through the historic society in Newport I researched every detail of that evening and we were successful in re-creating that evening at our home "Rosecliff" in beautiful Bucks County ,Pa. We invited our dear friends and relatives as the original guest list and they had to research and arrive in costume as (ie.) The Vanderbuilts, The Astors etc. It was a huge success and is fondly remembered as the best party we ever hosted. We now live in Palm Bay ,Fl. at our new home "Rosecliff South" Hope to vist Newport again soon.
